It's 2025!

I can still remember being a kid and marveling at the idea that I’d be alive in the year 2001. All of a sudden it's 2025. It really kind of blows my mind. (Deep contemplative pause). And... a couple updates to share this month.

The Moth

Did you make a resolution to get on stage and tell a story this year? I got you! I’ve been hosting storytelling shows for The Moth since 2014.

At first I thought it was fun. But a few years in, as the truth has become more and more under attack, I’ve realized how important people getting up and sharing their own truth really is. And since the pandemic I think we also have an increased need to connect and share our stories with each other.

If you’ve been to a storytelling show, you know how exciting it can be. If not, and you’re looking to be in community with other people and experience something that will never, ever happen again, I’d love to see you at an upcoming show.

This year The Moth will hold 17 storytelling shows in Portland. I’m be hosting 5 or 6 including the one this coming Monday on January 6th (I know, I know), at The Old Church. Tickets here. Oh, and if you’re interested in telling a 5-6 minute story, the theme is Reset. Which is a pretty broad theme which I bet you can make at least a story or two fit into.

I’ll also be telling a story at BYO Story at Al’s Den on Wednesday January 29th for a show produced and hosted by Jay Flewelling at Al’s Den.

Your Home

Many of you know my fabulous wife Susan. What you might not know is that after years of running a craft business and writing nine books, she went back to school for interior design and opened her own studio, Crafting Your Space. I think her superpower is getting to know what a client really wants and bringing it to life.

For the past year she has been helping clients with everything from whole house and individual room refreshes, remodels, renter-friendly designs, interior and exterior color consultation, and organizing, and is especially good working within a budget and with vintage and modern aesthetics. She’s created a new glimmers design package to add much-needed “glimmers” of beauty, joy, and hope to our homes and lives in these unsettling times.

If you could use some help turning your house into a home you love - which I think we could all really appreciate right now - take a look at her work here and reach out. She’d love to connect for a complimentary conversation. And if you’re not in the Portland area, she works with clients over Zoom as well!

Acting

While I’ve done a lot of performing, I haven’t really “acted" for a long time.

This past summer a director friend asked me to play the manager of the band Portugal. The Man in some skits for a concert film. I really had a fun time with it.

Then just a few months later my good friends Chelsea Cain and James Westby asked me to play a part in a film she wrote and he directed and starred in. I played against my good friend Frayn Masters, who I drove out to Black Butte Ranch with. We had a blast filming, got to do a lot of improv on screen, and got home just before the snow blew in.

So just putting it out in the Universe - I’m really enjoying acting and up for more roles!

Okay, that’s it. Hang in there. It’s going to be a bumpy ride. But we’re in this together.
