Well, January was terrible
It was just so bad. And so long. And so very difficult between the fires that ravaged Los Angeles sending friends and family evacuating from their homes, while waking up every morning to learn what new freedoms and equalities have been stripped from us, causing so many to fear for their safety and security. And on a personal note, I spent part of the month sick with the flu, and then mourning the loss of a dear family member. I have really enjoyed writing this newsletter and in fact often write it weeks in advance. This is the first time I've completely rewritten it, as everything has changed in a few short weeks. I'm going to flip the script here, and some share some positives and things I'm looking forward to. But I also want to call out how truly terrifying thing feel, and share that if you're scared or in despair, I'm so sorry, please know that we're in this together.
Life Coaching

As you might remember, I recently created a new show called AC Dickson: Life Coach.
A major part of the live show is bringing an audience member up on stage for a one-on-one coaching session. I’m realizing I really love the process of helping someone figure out where to go or what’s next. So in anticipation of doing the show in the coming year…
I’m offering up my coaching services! It can work a few way.
Private One-On-One Sessions
If you or someone you know is interested in a private coaching session, reach out! I’m happy to work over the phone, Zoom, or in person here in SE Portland.
I’m offering 50-minute sessions on a sliding scale with the following suggested rates:
$175 for professionals and flush folks
$100 for non-profit and art workers
$35 for students and those between work
If you are interested or know someone who is, you can reach out to me directly. And very soon you will be able to book through Mt. Freelance, which will be set up for pre-payment and synched up to my calendar.
Public Live Sessions
If you are interested in being part of the AC Dickson: Life Coach live show, I’m planning some performances throughout the year. This is free coaching, but it will be in front of an audience and part of the performance. So you will be part of the show, essentially the co-star.
If you’re interested in joining the waiting list, please let me know.
Klamath Falls!

I’m excited to be doing my second ever out-of-town fundraising event later this month. It’ll be an benefit for scholarships and funding for the youth and educational programs at the Ross Ragland theater down in Klamath Falls.
I haven’t been in person yet, but over many calls I’m learning what an essential part of the community the theater is and how kids and teens who don’t otherwise have an opportunity to express themselves through theater and find their people come from as far as two hours away to be part of what they do.
So just a reminder I’m ready to help you plan and execute a great night of community building and fundraising. I’m getting booked for this spring and fall, but still have lots of capacity to help other schools, arts non-profits and purpose-driven organizations.
3 Books and a TV Show

As mentioned, I had the flu to start the New Year (and yes, I had my shot) so I had plenty of time to read. Here are a few books I’d really recommend.
Fresh off enjoying Heaven and Earth Grocery Store I read James McBride’s Deacon King Kong. They are both set in the last century, and are really stories of an entire community. I love how he takes his time introducing us to every character and allowing them to be fully formed, even when it doesn’t seem to progress the story. Only to slowly but surely bring everyone’s story lines together at the end of each books. Take your time with both and enjoy the ride.
If you need a quick read, a friend gave me Days at the Morisaki Bookshop. It’s a lovely book about how wonderful it is to read books and what I hear friends call a “burner.” Thin enough you can read it in an afternoon.
As far as TV, my wife Susan and I absolutely loved Nobody Wants This. The acting is great. The writing is great. And it averages about 1.5 times I have to leave the room in an wow, this is uncomfortable way, but unlike say Curb Your Enthusiasm, the moments are short and I can usually come back and sit back down before I miss too much of the action. Especially fun to see Kirstin Bell’s range as she co-stars and we were coming off a Bad Moms/Bad Moms Christmas double-header over the holidays.
Free Advice
If you like the Super Bowl, good for you!
If not… keep in mind that Super Bowl Sunday is one of the best days to do stuff that is usually super busy. It is, for example, the only Sunday you can go sledding or skiing on Mt. Hood all winter and not get stuck in traffic coming back to Portland. You can go visit the Zoo or go to the movies and have the place virtually to yourself.
Okay, that’s it for now. Hang in there, and type at you again in a few weeks.
